We are pleased to announce that Professor Pete Schuhmann of the Cameron School of Business at the University of North Carolina Wilmington is the recipient of the 2014 Kenneth Elzinga Distinguished Teaching Award. The Southern Economic Association established this award to recognize extraordinary contributions to the teaching of economics by our members. Kenneth Elzinga is known as one of the economics profession's best classroom teachers. His willingness to finance an award recognizing individuals who share his passion for teaching excellence is remarkably generous and a splendid example of his many contributions to the Southern Economic Association.
Professor Schuhmann's effectiveness in teaching has been truly outstanding since he joined UNCW in 1999. He has been recognized by the University through several awards, including the Chancellor's Teaching Excellence Award, the Distinguished Teaching Professorship Award, the Board of Trustees Teaching Excellence Award, and the MBA outstanding faculty award. In addition, Dr. Schuhmann was awarded the UNC system's Board of Governors Teaching Excellence Award in 2013, and he was elected by students to deliver the Keynote Address at UNCW's Freshman Convocation in 2009. He is regularly chosen by the graduating seniors as the faculty member from the economics department who has had the greatest impact on their lives.
During his time at UNCW, Professor Schuhmann has received excellent student evaluation scores, often the highest in the department. Students continually rave about his clarity of explanation and ability to stimulate interest in economics even though he teaches large sections of approximately 200 students each semester. He accomplishes these exceptional reviews while maintaining an extremely high degree of rigor. Dr. Schuhmann is up-to-date on learning technology; he teaches summer online classes of Natural Resource Economics that fill to capacity.
Professor Schuhmann does not believe that teaching excellence is limited to the classroom. His door is always open. He has served as the faculty advisor for several student clubs, including the National Association of Business Economists. He has also served on and chaired numerous honors and masters theses committees.
His excellence in the classroom and attention to students generate a great deal of attraction to the economics major at UNCW, which has grown from approximately 15 to over 120 students since his arrival. He has taught six unique undergraduate courses, and three graduate level courses. Professor Schuhmann developed two new undergraduate courses which have been added to the permanent curriculum. At the graduate level, he developed and teaches Econometrics and Forecasting, a core requirement in our International MBA program, and the Thesis Workshop where students are equipped to conduct thesis research.
Professor Schuhmann has served as a co-organizer of the department's annual economics teaching workshop held at Wrightsville Beach. This conference has been quite successful, attracting notable speakers (including Ben Bernanke, John Taylor, and Ken Elzinga) and participants from across the Southeast U.S. and beyond. The workshop has completed its thirteenth year and enhances participants' teaching effectiveness. Dr. Schuhmann has also published numerous papers on teaching and pedagogy.
Pete Schuhmann is an outstanding choice for the Kenneth G. Elzinga Distinguished Teaching Award.
