I was on that team once (The Magnificent 10)!
Tonight, the North Oldham players will take on a team from Keystone, Pa., at 8 o’clock in their first foray into this year’s Little League World Series. ...
North Oldham is one of 16 teams — eight from the United States, eight from other countries — participating in the nationally televised double-elimination tournament. The games started Thursday and conclude with the title contest Aug. 28.
I moved to Kentucky in 6th grade and played for the Optimists. Being afraid of the ball (they are very hard) I struggled most of the year. But the last game, for some reason, I played shortshop and made an unassisted double play and (closed my eyes and) poked a double to right (it's weird the things you remember). That was enough to make the all star team where I struck out on three pitches in our only game. That was my last at bat ever.
And I've been wondering why there are only 10 kids on the team:
Teams are allowed a maximum of 14 players, and at least seven teams at Williamsport will have fully loaded squads. Under league rules, every player must participate in every game. Brad Bates said having a 10-player roster is an advantage because he has to sub in only one player.
Four 12 year olds didn't make the team so that they would have a competitive advantage. Sad. I imagine it was a kid like me, likely to strike out.
Anyway, I'll be pulling for the boys from LaGrange tonight!
