Here's excerpts from a discussion that took place in October at the TestMagic PhD Economics Forum:
The question:
Does anyone know much about the lifestyle of an economics professor? It sounds really freaking good from what I understand. You research stuff that interests YOU, teach a few classes, and pretty much have an unstructured schedule. I read Tyler Cowen's blog and he seems to live a life of leisure - he reads a book a day I hear, watches a lot of movies, goes out to restaurants all the time, teaches a few classes, and updates his blog. I know you don't start out that way, but it just sounds awesome.

Here's a relevant post from Tim Haab at env-econ.net
Environmental Economics: When do you start working again?
Well, I'm flattered.
...and Tim Haab is tenured at a university that's usually not bandied about at the top of the rankings.
Unflattered.
