North Carolina will have to pay billions of dollars in the coming decades as global warming leads to property damage, land erosion and losses in tourism and recreation business, economists predicted Wednesday.

"Right now, it seems that people are focusing on the costs of addressing climate change," Whitehead said. "The benefits of implementing climate change policy would occur further down the road, which makes them easier to ignore or postpone. Our numbers are the cost of doing nothing or the benefit of doing something."
