I was walking to lunch today with a colleague who is spending next year in Zurich. I was asking him about plans--what are you doing with your house? Where are your kids going to school? Where are you going to live?--when I asked a question that showed just how out of touch I am--What are you doing for a car?
His answer? "Oh, we'll just use the car sharing network."
"Car sharing network?" I asked in the voice of a clueless moron.
"Yeah, you know, you pay for a debit car and then you look up online where a nearby co-op car is located. You walk to the car, swipe the card, the car unlocks, you get the key from the glovebox and drive the car for the day. Your rental fee is deducted directly from your card."
"They have enough cars for this?" I asked, again in clueless moron voice.
"Sure, lots of cities have networks."
"Hmmph...cool idea. I've never heard of it."
