As coastal land prices rise, fishing piers can't keep up (Bogue Banks: end of an era):
Ten years ago, there were eight piers along Bogue Banks. When Sportsman's pier is dismantled, there will be two major ones left: the Oceanana in Atlantic Beach and the Bogue Inlet pier in Emerald Isle. The Bogue Inlet pier is under contract to be sold.

One negative impact of the coastal housing bubble (and hurricanes) is the reduction in the number of piers and, as a result, reasonable fishing opportunities for regular people.
