Last week, while driving my daughters to camp, I found myself caught in slow moving traffic. We were doing 50 mph in a 65 zone. I also noticed that a lot of cars were moving to the left to pass a slow moving R/V. When I finally got near the R/V and was ready to blow by it, I noticed a handmade sign on the back:
Under 60 mph until prices are under $1.50 per gallon.
My thoughts**? Suppose the R/V gets 15 mpg--I think I'm being generous. Also suppose driving 50 mph instead of 65 improves fuel mileage by 10%. That means on a 600 mile trip, the R/V would burn 36.36 gallons at 50 mph versus versus 40 gallons at 65 mph. A savings of 3.64 gallons or about $11 (at $3 per gallon). I'd be willing to bet the R/V driver could find 11 other drivers willing to pay $1 each for him to GET THE [beeeeeep] OUT OF THE WAY! Sorry, I'm an angry driver.
** yes, I think about economics while driving.
