GOT A QUESTION? Got a question about environmental economics? Why do economists like benefit-cost analysis? Tradeable permits? Ask an environmental economist at the Answer Desk.
I was amused by this question because of two experiences I had less than a year apart:
In late 2006 I was on Nantucket and there was a firesorm of protest against a battery of windmills proposed for 5 miles offshore. A frequent comment I heard was "I support wind power, but not at Nantucket".
Six months later I was visiting the beach at Galveston, and was stunned to see numerous Oil Rigs 10 miles out in the water. This was a major beach resort, and apparently Texans don't complain.
Since the question did not include any benefits other than the view of the windmills or oil rigs the correct conclusion is that most people think windmills are pretty! Also, that some people think oil rigs are picturesque!
Well if I have to explain it, it's not witty... :)
I'm saying that the question makes it seem as the relevant tradeoff is a "bunch of wind turbines" in plain sight on the beach, versus a "bunch of oil rigs" in plain sight on the beach. And for various reasons, that's not true.
E.g. how much energy one oil rig produces vs. one turbine, the various economics involved in locating wind or oil rigs closer or farther from the shore, etc.
Also, just a general point: Should we be saying "windmill" or "wind turbine"? I think a windmill makes bread or something, doesn't it? Like, it uses wind power to let the miller do whatever he does to flour?
Bob Murphy, that's the correct question; how many windmills does it take to produce the energy of one oil rig? The poll question is a bit bias.
Maybe the question should be rephrased:
"Suppose you go to the beach (and your annual energy consumption is 12mwatts), What would you rather see on the horizon, 237 windmills or one oil rig?
That seems like a rather loaded question. A pro-life website could have added the option, "A bunch of aborted fetuses" to similar effect.

Bob,
Huh?

I'm starting a company to disguise oil rigs as Windmills, just like we disguise cell towers to look like dairy silos and trees.
Anyone want to invest?
