Green GOP

Here's a new blog that's worth a look, Green GOP:

GreenGOP.org highlights the fact that many Republicans are also committed environmentalists, in the tradition of President Theodore Roosevelt.

GreenGOP.org believes that enironmental conservation and economic development are not mutually exclusive, but in fact complementary.

Rather than fighting for environmental conservation from the political left, GreenGOP.org seeks to engage fellow Republicans, who are perceived as being "anti-environment," in a positive policy debate.  GreenGOP.org argues that contrary to popular belief, environmental conservation is consisent with sustainable pro-growth economic development policies.

Good luck guys!

Here is a post from April 9 (Republican Governors Fighting Pollution In Northeast):

Republican Governor Robert L. Ehrlich (MD) recently added Maryland as the eight northeast state to join the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative.  The collective agreement commits participating states to drastically reduce pollution from power plants that produce smog, acid rain and harmful ozone, while capping emissions of CO2.  It is interesting to note that the RGGI was initiated by Republican Governor George E. Pataki in 2003.  Today, of the eight participating states, four are led by Republican Governors: NY, MD, CT, and VT.  These Republican governors understand that long term costs of uncontrolled pollution far outweighs the short term costs of producing cleaner energy.  National republicans ought to follow their lead in developing national energy and pollution reduction policies.

This sounds like something we might say, without the R word thrown around.

without the R word thrown around.

Why do you hate regional efforts?

I joined, and get mailings from, REP America. I'm kind of conflicted about how useful they are:

http://www.repamerica.org/

It isn't so much that these guys are bad (they're not), it's just that the antienvironmentalism is so deep in the party.

Actually, 'antienvironmentalism' in the GOP is not so deep - 30 years ago it was the GOP that created the foundation of today's successful environmental legislation, including the Endagered Species Act. So it's a relatively new thing, that some GOP'ers have lost sight of Republican conservationist roots. We're trying to get them back on track.

'sustainable pro-growth policies'.

haha! Good 'un!

Oh, and what odo said. Do msny folk hate enviros and the environment that this is a looooong row to hoe.

D

Ducks unlimited has resored more wetlands then all other conservation groups combined.

Odo's and Dano's hostility to the greenGOP just goes to show that thier agenda has less to do with habitat preservation and more toward defending the statism of the left.

Ehrlich fought that bill tooth and nail. Details here:

http://gristmill.grist.org/story/2006/4/10/233550/271

Geez Joshua, I give some of my hard-earned money to a Green GOP outfit (in the general sense), and you interpret that as "hostility."

I thought a liberatian, of all people, would take that as an endorsement ;-)

GreenGOP, you are definitely fighting the good fight, but with respect to "antienvironmentalism," that's the thing I draw in part from the REP America mailings.

The whole "Ted Stevens wing" is strong, and nothing proves that better than the fact that the GOP let that dumb-ass 1.5 mile restriction on wind power go through.

Re: Sen. Stevens

From the NMFS FishNews email:

National – NOAA Announces Winners of the 2006 Marine Stewardship Awards

Today NOAA announced the recipients of the first-annual marine Stewardship and Sustainability Awards. This national award program was developed by NOAA Fisheries Service to honor innovation and excellence in marine stewardship by recognizing organizations and individuals who have advanced conservation and sustainable use of U.S. marine resources. The following recipients were selected from 48 nominations for awards in six categories of achievement:

Senator Ted Stevens has received the Special Recognition Award for working tirelessly throughout his long and successful career to win the support of the United States Congress for the laws that form the basis of U.S. federal fisheries management and marine conservation programs. Senator Stevens has consistently advocated for science-based management of living marine resources, keeping the sustainable use of these resources at the forefront of the nation's agenda.

etc

I guess it's not pork when it goes to something we like?

http://www.fakr.noaa.gov/lena/default.htm

Ted gets federal money for a facility named after himself, and the organization receiving the money gives Ted a price.

How .... traditional.

I followed the Green GOoper link and found this:

GreenGOP.org believes that enironmental conservation and economic development are not mutually exclusive, but in fact complementary.

Is joshua doing their spelling for them? Lawdy!

I also see verbiage shades of Luntz/Newt along with the impossible-by-laws-of-physics rationale of 'sustainable pro-growth policies' so that makes me...er...skeptical.

Best,

D

Sylvia Tognetti contextualizes what Dave R said above.

Best,

I just noticed a fuedian typo .. should be "gives Ted a prize."

On sustainable growth, it is conceptually possible ... we just need to go over to a "ringtone" economy. Where people make $500 million a year by sending bits over the air.

Put another way, see Peter Tertzakian on the "race to efficiency."

pfft. forgot to typo check my typo check. freudian.

thanks for the typo correction, spelling bee champ. Eyes on the big issues I see. Sylvia Tognetti would give herself more credit for signing the RGGI than the man who actually made it law, as she states in her piece. Opposing the RGGI was every utility company in Maryland, the very companies that provide power to everyone in the state, including the people who supported the bill. Do you think ANY governor wouldn't consider their position? I'm grateful that a coalition of groups got it to his desk but here's a tip to liberals and the left - when a Republican in the end does something good, GIVE HIM CREDIT! By continuing to bash him, you're just setting yourselves up for another fight. Show Gov. Ehrlich instead that you'll give him favorable press, and that he'll get a few more votes next election too. To learn more about sustainable growth, just search online for plenty of examples around the world.

I might have given Ehrlich some credit if he hadn't pulled that silly stunt of locking the door. its about civility...

We live on an oblate spheroid of finite dimension. Growth will stop sometime, Simonian cornucopian ideology notwithstanding.

Best,

D

addendum to previous comment - in the interest of civility, and to give credit where credit is due, Governor Ehrlich does get credit for the Chesapeake Bay Restoration Fund, which he not only signed into law but also proposed. This is a surcharge on water bills that is used to fund upgrades to sewage treatment facilities and agricultural cover crops. We call it the "Flush tax" - it is based on water use. The LCV also gives him credit for a brownfields initiative - but not much else.

I really enjoy reading your blog, it always has great insight. But I am very frustrated with the fact that so few people are talking about presidential candidates and their thoughts on global warming. Now that it is down to just a few candidates I would think that this would be a bigger issue.

Live Earth just picked up this topic and put out an article ( http://www.liveearth.org/news.php ) live earth is also asking why the presidential candidates are not being solicited for their stance on the issue of the climate change. I just saw a poll on www.EarthLab.com that says people care a lot about what their next leader thinks of global warming. Does anyone know of another poll or other results about this subject?

Here is the page where I saw the EarthLab poll: http://www.earthlab.com/life.aspx. This is a pretty legit website; they are endorsed by Al Gore and the alliance for climate protection and they have a carbon footprint calculator. Does anyone have a strong opinion about this like I do? No matter what your political affiliation is or who you vote for this is an important issue for our environment, our economy and for homeland security.
