NC gas tax increase

Brace yourself, North Carolinians, as drivers rush to fill up on Dec 31! And you out-of-staters, buy your gas before hitting the NC portions of I-95, I-40 and I-77. Otherwise you'll be victim of the great gas tax increase of 2006 (Tax hike ...):

North Carolina's gas tax will rise 2.8 cents a gallon on Jan. 1 -- the biggest one-time jump in nearly 20 years ...  . The latest tax increase, to 29.9 cents a gallon, will push North Carolina from having the nation's eighth-highest state gas tax to the sixth.

"Bottom line, we have to pass on everything like this," said Sami Nafisi, who owns Sam's Mart, one of the Charlotte region's largest station chains. "I hate to see that because it hurts everybody."

State Sen. Phil Berger, a Rockingham Republican who proposed a gas-tax rollback and cap in October, said: "This is harmful to our economy because it will take even that much more money from North Carolinians."

A driver using 10 gallons a week would pay an extra $15 a year with the tax increase.

Thwwwwwwpht. That's the sound of the NC economy as each driver cuts back on textiles, furniture, smokes and tourism. Sarc.

I THINK THAT GOVERN0R MIKE EASLEY (WHOM I NEVER VOTED FOR), SHOULD FINALLY GET OFF HIS BUTT AND DO SOMETHING RIGHT FOR THE NC PEOPLE LIKE ME WHO CANNOT AFFORD ANYMORE TAXES. I CAN BARELY AFFORD TO SUPPORT MY FAMILY(LIKE MANY FAMILIES IN NC) AND HERE GOES OUR WONDERFUL STATE REPRESENTATIVES WHO CARE SO MUCH ABOUT US, WHAT DO THEY DO? MORE TAX. I SAY NO MORE TAXES! HOW ABOUT A GREAT BIG TAX BREAK! THIS IS WHAT WE ALL NEED! GOVERNOR EASLEY, WE NEED YOU TO THINK ABOUT US FOR A CHANGE. THE VOTERS OF NC.

hey john,

Want to trade states? :)

Not only do we have higher gas taxes but we have better christmas tree also.

Pac NW x-iday trees suck!

We have the worst roads in the US (third from Bottom, I think). People working 2 and 3 jobs to keep their Family. Yet our Greedy State Government, wants to increase the Gas Tax--I say Great Plan!--NOT! Isn't the Government designed to take care of the people of the Great State. It is embarrasing for our State Government to perform this way.

$250 million dollars are being tranfered from the Highway Fund (gas tax) to the General Fund this year. The State goverment is balancing the state budget with Highway Fund money. I don't believe this money should be spent on anything other than what it was intended for. Also the state of N.C. projected budget has a surplus of $500 million. What's wrong with this picture??? Please remember this at voting time (if you can afford gas to drive to the polls).

THE NEW TAX HIKE IS HIGHWAY ROBBERY (NO PUN PNTENDE) THIS MONBEY IS SUPPOSED TO GO FOR BUILDING HIGHWAYS NOT THE GENEREAL SLUSH FUND. IT IRKS ME TO NO END THAT POLITICIANS NOWADAYS DO AS THEY PLEASE WITH NO CONSEQUENCE FOR THEIR ACTIONS. THIS NEEDS TO STOP I THINK THIS IS CLEARLY TAXATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION WHICH IS AGAINST OUR US CONSTITUTION/ PLEASE VISIT STOPTHEGASTAXHIKE.COM ANS SIGN THE PETITION AS CITIZENS OF NC AND THE US WE NEED TO BAND TOGETHER AND GOVERN OUR SELVES NOT THE OTHER WAY AROUND OF THE PEOPLE BY THE PEOPLE AND FOR THE PEOPLE NOT THE GOVERNMENT.

I vote and I think that all voters should vote mike easley out of office. NO MORE GAS TAXES MR EASLEY

In order to calm the retoric down on this post i would just like to say this:

Joshua,

We'll see. But in advance of the outcome, all I can say is that Pac NW f-ball teams suck!

John

Wait, are you saying they play sports on the west coast?

I hope all NC. residence remember at election time who raised gas tax when it's all ready higher then most other states.

i like you
